According to the U.S. Census Bureau, side-by-side with Arizona's hot job growth figures, Arizona lead the nation with a population increase of 3.6% during the period July 1, 2005 to July 1, 2006 with an overall net increase of 213,311 statewide. Nevada ranked second at a 3.5% increase (one wonders where they're going to get all the water to sustain growth in Nevada - not to mention what might happen to the growth of "The Strip" during a slowing economy and tighter wallets?). This is followed by Idaho with 2.6%, Georgia at 2.6%, and Texas at 2.5%. California remains the most populous state at 36.5 million (July 1, 2006) followed by Texas (23.5 million), New York (19.3 million), Florida (18.1 million), and Illinois (12.8 million). The West was the fastest growing region hitting a 1.5% overall increase ending July 1, 2006. Maricopa County (Phoenix) also distinguished itself as the fastest growing county in the U.S. with a 130,000 increase during the same period. 71,000 of the total newcomers were Latino, 36,000 white, 9,000 black, and 8,800 Asian.
